Inverurie Locos left an exceptionally breezy Kynoch Park on Saturday with full pointage, a highly pleasing outcome from a tricky & challenging afternoon. Snow showers had been circling the ground from early morning but as kick off approached it was the gusting strong wind that could have had this league fixture in jeopardy. Referee McAvinue approached both clubs ahead of kick off to advise that he would be allowing additional reasonable time at dead ball situations to let the worst of the blustery gusts blow past. Commendable match management. Locos had record scorer Neil Gauld injured, with Sam Burnett returning to the starting group. Keith were defending the Balloch Road End & had the wind at their backs in the first half. It was both obvious & evident from early on that anything similar to the football we saw at the Spain 1982 World Cup was not going to be witnessed here, but the usual bucketloads of SHFL honest graft was readily available. The early sparring yielded no clear opportunities for either club but on the fifteen minute mark Greg Mitchell burst into the box and squared the ball just evading his team-mates. Chris Angus went down after a tangle of legs with penalty appeals muted. Scott Gray would have been clean through for Keith but the wind-assisted pass was incredibly difficult to tame. Ex-Loco Robertson was injured and was replaced by Smith. A Gray scissors kick was just too high & next a Keith corner led to a scramble under the Locos bar. Three minutes to half time and an opener for the homesters. Another ex-Loco Mike SELFRIDGE with the finish from close in, the goal coming coming from a corner on the far side. Chris Angus was closing in on the Keith goal but a heavy touch saw the ball bobble away from the leading scorer. The same player, right on the stroke of the half time whistle, appeared to have been felled with a challenge from behind in the act of shooting, & whilst both sets of players stopped for the expected penalty, no award was given. HT 1-0 Keith. Stott replaced Reid at half-time with Gaffer Low re-shaping his charges. Jamie Michie fired goalward from the halfway line & had Dey tipping over his bar. Keith didn’t look to be disheartened by playing in
to the wind & forced Souter into a miraculous block & Reid into a world class reflex stop. Pivotal moments as it turned out. A let off next with Selfride heading wide from two yards. A Keith handball appeared from the stands to be well inside the penalty box but the free kick was given on the edge of the box. Hunter rasped it & Dey dived to repel. The goalie then got underneath a swinging cross but luckily for him the ball just cleared the backstick. Angus shot just wide from a Souter pass but the deserved leveller came on sixty five minutes, Michie guided the ball into the path of STOTT who half-volleyed the ball sweetly into the onion bag. Stott & Angus went close again with a Mitchell cross getting caught by the wind & so nearly dipping under the bar. Eight minutes of regular time left & Andy HUNTER had Inverurie ahead, his instinctive finish coming from a quality Nacho McLean corner. Greg Mitchell picked up the game’s only yellow card for checking the run of an opponent. Ninety three minutes on the clock & that man ANGUS sealed the deal with a lovely lob header over Dey. Praise due to Andy Low, Steven Park & the lads for staying calm on a stormy day, being patient & clinching the win. It’s another testing fixture at Buckie Thistle on Saturday, ko 3pm, as Locos try & complete the season as strongly as possible.
