Inverurie Locos produced a performance that completely made light of a very heavy surface at Forres, the Railwaymen putting on a show that warmed the Christmas cockles of supporters everywhere. The park passed a precautionary inspection at 8.30am. Gaffer Low, for the first time in his tenure, was able to field a repeat starting eleven from the mint ‘after eight’ outing in the Old Farm derby seven days earlier. Mosset Park has seen some struggles over the years for Inverurie & so a brisk up & at ‘em start was highly desirable. The travelling Locos army saw Neil Gauld fire straight at the legs of long serving keeper Knight, with the goalie then stretching to tip a Dingwall rebound away for a corner. Allan MacPhee shot high & over before Forres found themselves behind. Gauld again drew a stop from Knight but Chris ANGUS was in the right place to sweep home the rebound. Locos acceleration from the off had thrown a spanner in the works for Mechanics & next Gauld, looking really sharp, had a shot deflected wide before an ambitious Angus scissors kick flew off the target. Skipper Mitchell didn’t want to miss out & his snap volley wasn’t far away. Twelve minutes in & the deserved second goal arrived. Yet more flowing football had Hunter, showing awareness of his position & that of his team-mates, cushioning a header perfectly into the path of a rejuvenated Jonny SMITH. Big John didn’t need to break stride & passed the ball into the net. Liquid football, kiss my face. Keeper Knight was averting the proverbial cricket score & next he fended an Angus header then saw a Smith direct free kick whistle past an upright. Jonny Smith then curled a lovely attempt just wide with his left peg. A frustrated Forres made a rare foray into Locos land with Soane shooting straight at Reid. Angus shot over & Dingwall had an attempt held, as Inverurie peppered the home goal without moving on the scoreboard. Smith took a sore one, a swinging elbow cutting the lip of the big fella. After pitchside treatment the popular Englishman was back. Locos were worth more than a two goal advantage & a penalty box body check on Mitchell provided a chance to extend the lead. Up stepped GAULD who rolled the penalty kick home. HT 3-0 to Locos. The second period started with Stuart Soane dragging an effort wide & Lee Fraser seeing a header off target too. Chris ANGUS is a player who never fails to impress & his finish for the Locos fourth goal was pure class. Walking onto a rebound the blonde bomber hit a peach of a strike with right to left swerve that swished into the Can Can onion bag. Sam Burnett took a heavy knock just before half time & was replaced by club captain McLean. Lee Fraser wasn’t giving up & crashed a header against the underside of the Reid bar, then a disguised Gauld pass had Angus through & forcing a nice block from Knight. Stott replaced Hunter. It was all Locos, with the visitors shifting the ball at pace & with an accuracy that was wonderful to observe from the excellent vantage point that the Mosset stand offers. Angus had a header saved, Gauld shot just over, with MacPherson trying to respond at the other end with a angled drive flying over. Cooper replaced Gauld before a Souter header cleared the bar, a Stott effort was charged down & a clever Cooper dink was just too strong. Mitchell & Angus were next to take aim with the latter meeting another cross superbly but the header crashed off the face of the bar. Smith, Angus, Mitchell & Cooper all had chances to see Inverurie go nap. Credit to Stuart Knight for keeping the score down, with the Locos dominance & twenty six attempts upon goal well worthy of a far heavier win. Credit to referee Bruce who took care of this clash with a light touch, administering advantage willingly to both sides and impressing the watching observer.
Locos players, staff, committee & supporters can all enjoy their turkey & trimmings after this win, accomplished with real style & seeing the club still in the silver medal berth. Lossiemouth come calling on December 28th to Harlaw, ko 3pm.
