BROCH SUBS SINK HMS LOCOS
PRIDE RESTORED BUT ITS A SHIELD EXIT FOR THE RAILWAYMEN. Morrison Motors Aberdenshire Shield R2 FRASERBURGH 2 INVERURIE LOCOS 0 (AET) Locos journeyed to Bellslea Park on Wednesday with expectations suitably low after the 5-0 humiliation in the SHFL fixture four days earlier. However it a hugely improved performance that forced the match into extra time, but alas two ruthless finishes from young Broch substitutes sent the club out of the Shield. There was drama ahead of kick off with Ryan Broadhurst’s airborne day job seeing him arrive late but Chopper was to land into this cup tie at half time. A big boost was the return of Chris Angus as a starter, Colin Charlesworth moving to the bench. It was breezy & wet at Bellslea ahead off this match, conditions that didn’t get any better until extra time. Broch settled slightly the better but the early stages sowed the onlookers that the Locos were in a different mode altogether. A Barbour shot was wide, a Cameron Buchan swivel & shot went inches wide & a Soapy defensive header flew just over his own bar. Next a Campbell header went close but the first of several disappointments from the match officials, from a Locos angle. Chris Angus was sent clear one on one but a late whistle called them back for a free kick, a poor interpretation of advantage. A Leyden are kick was caught by Leask then Greg Mitchell, defying all the odds to be playing after a heavy knock on Saturday, cleared a Barbour attempt off the line. Andy Reid was then at full stretch to tip a Campbell drive around the post. A Souter flicked shot gave Locos respite, before a pivotal moment of real controversy. Jordan Leyden collected a pass, looking very much onside, an initial reaction later backed up by fans of both clubs at that end of the park. Jordan jinked into the box & shot low into the net, the flag went up & that looked highly contentious. HT 0-0. Inverurie stepped it up in the second period. Angus & Michie went close, forcing some corners in quick succession & generally forcing play towards the Broch goal. Scott Barbour went in very late on keeper Reid, with the keeper already playing with an injury. The foul was missed by the referee. FT 0-0. Into extra time & McCabe shot wide with the whole goal gaping. The referee must have been unsighted when Broadhurst was then cleared out & left prone on the deck at the other end. Butcher was yellowed for a foul on Souter. HT ET 0-0. Angus was bundled to the deck but no penalty was awarded. Fraserburgh broke the deadlock in 109 minutes, Greg BUCHAN melting a drive back across the goal & into the roof of the net, an excellent conversion. Two nil three minutes later, Sean BUTCHER with a firm drive low past Reid. Locos were out of the tournament but had at least given the travelling fans a proper show.
