Inverurie Locos put the disappointment of the Wick defeat to bed & left Lochaber with three points on Saturday, winning 7-1. A far better division of an eight goal aggregate! Connor Rennie was back in his right back berth with Greg Mitchell defending the opposite flank. Jamie Michie went into a midfield berth. Fort William have had their struggles on the park, but behind the scenes the club are making significant strides forward, with the Claggan Park infrastructure getting better & better, & the playing surface looking in decent order too. Enthused by a new Chairman & energetic new committee members, the Fort are now constructively engaging with their local community & will enjoy the rewards in time to come. Business is business however come three o’clock & Locos were attacking the mountain end in the incessant Fort William rain. Jamie Michie had a powerful free kick charged down with the endlessly energetic Greg Mitchell then almost playing in Joe McCabe. Stuart Duff massaged a fifty yard pass right into Jordan Leyden’s path & the subsequent shot flew wide. Joe McCabe then cracked a header off the inside of the post but the opener was to follow next. Neil GAULD eased a volley home from a sumptuous whipped Neil McLean free kick. The goal took Neil to the quarter century for the season, the fourth time he has reached this seasonal total wearing red & black, & in the quickest ever time. Thirteen minutes & two-nil. A long ball forward saw Joe McCabe rise like the proverbial salmon & nod the ball down for Neil GAULD to volley home with glee. Connor Rennie shot from distance next & keeper Ligertwood fumbled the ball but recovered to avert the ball sneaking over the line. Gauld then had another effort go inches wide, with Fort then replying with Josh Knowles shooting into Reid’s arms. A Michie drive was deflected wide & a Broadhurst header went wide before a wee defensive blooper gifted Fort a goal. A flighted ball forward was headed back by Rennie but wrong footed Reid, with TREASURER tapping home at the back stick. Joe McCabe then renewed his kinship with the Claggan goalposts with his low sweetly struck shot fantastically tipped onto the post by the Fort keeper. Andy Reid of Fort William then struck an effort wide of the goalposts of Andy Reid of Inverurie. Thirty two minutes & a hat-trick for the Locos number nine. GAULD was yet again in the right place to receive a cute Leyden dinked cross ball to finish neatly. Callum Fraser then misdirected a header about a foot wide of his own sticks. Quigg was yellow carded for blocking a free kick causing the Fort bench to receive a long lecture from referee Seago. Neil Gauld blootered a twenty yard free kick towards the Fort goal with Ligertwood saving with distinction. Three minutes before the break & Joe MCCABE scored a stunner. It was a fully fledged Gerd Muller scissors kick, whoosh, kaboom, into the onion bag. Glorious stuff. HT 4-1. Early in the second period & a yellow card for Rennie after a robust challenge. Eight minutes into the second period & Neil GAULD was to the four. A pass down the left flank looked certain to go out but Jordan Leyden horsed after the ball & not only reached the speeding pass, but wrapped his left foot around the ball & planted it right on the noggin of the inrushing GAULD. McLean fired a long range special just over. Mark SOUTER wanted in on this goalscoring thing & bulleted a header home. Locos bombarded the Fort goal with Ligertwood performing heroics especially so when repelling a McLean free kick strike, the ball tipped onto the post. One minute left & time enough for GAULD to go nap. Neil rounded the goalie & stroked home number twenty nine for the campaign. The match was ended bang on ninety minutes, not a single second allocated for the five substitutions, but perhaps the referee had a table booked at an exclusive restaurant somewhere in the West Highlands..... FT Fort 1 Locos 7. Forres Mechanics come calling to Harlaw on Saturday, cockahoop after spanking Buckie for seven, & laying fair claim to be the SHFL ‘pro-rata champions’ most seasons. A tough assignment for Inverurie but one to relish.
