Inverurie’s ongoing cup-tie phobia continued on Tuesday night with a humbling & humiliating loss to Banks o’ Dee. It’ll now be at least four years between victories in the Evening Express Abedeenshire Cup, with the second oldest cup competition in Scotland again providing no joy for the Locos faithful. Banks O’ Dee thoroughly deserved to progress to a tie with Aberdeen & only the brilliant Andy Reid avoided an even worse night at Harlaw Park. The big keeper & Ryan Broadhurst came back into the side, youngsters Cook & Reid reverting to the bench. Banks o’ Dee, defending Super League champions & for whom clinching the title is akin to shooting large fish in a small barrel, these ties are the proverbial cup finals, and Locos should have expected nothing less. Their previous 4-1 cup-tie success at the same ground was out of the freak envelope, with ring rusty homesters & individual errors producing a bizarre score. This win however was merited & down to their own fine play, aided & assisted by a collective disaster from the outfield ten for Locos. Inverurie started flat, stayed flat & the contrast in their energy & style from that displayed against Formartine exactly a week earlier was gargantuan. Dee bombarded the Reid goal with eight efforts on target in the first period. Andy was in top form, repelling, blocking, fielding & thwarting Banks o’ Dee. Incredibly Locos went in ahead at the break. Chris Angus was crudely dragged to the ground inside the box, with a red card looking probable as it didn’t really look like a genuine attempt to win the ball. Anyway Neil GAULD put negative thoughts about his miss against Fort William to the side & netted with ease. HT 1-0. Dee will have been feeling aggrieved & certainly made up for this with gusto in a second period that is one the home side will have nightmares over. HENDERSON converted two gifts on fifty & sixty five minutes to take the lead. Inverurie never looked like clawing this back, bereft of ideas & any composure. BARBOUR stroked the ball home on seventy minutes, before a speculative scissors kick from ALEXANDER, unchallenged, flew high into the net. Sub Lachie MCLEOD saw Dee go nap late on, with Locos on the rack. FT 1-5. Inverurie can quite properly point to a brutal list of injuries but the players will need to re-group quickly. Locos will bounce back from this and Messrs Cooper & Park will ensure this is the case.
Saturday sees a visit to Grantown before champions Cove visit on Wednesday 29th.
