• Sometimes there’s glory & pride in defeat & Tuesday’s Irn Bru cup-tie was a case in point. Boss Neil Cooper had almost a full side injured or unavailable in contrast to the visitors who could comfortably field two XIs in the Highland League each week. Many supporters felt that Inverurie didn’t lay a glove on Formartine in the league match, but there was no such sentiment after this gutsy ninety minutes from their favourites. After the debacle & drama on Saturday, some order was restored with top referee Mike Roncone in the middle. Messrs Crisp & Herd were given rare starts with Rennie in at centre half to partner Souter. Herd was at left back with Mitchell on the right. Leyden, Duff, McCabe & Crisp across the middle, north football’s top scorer Gauld up top with Angus. Locos were given little chance of doing anything in this clash but started well & were showing loads of spirit & desire. Angus missed an amazing chance from eight yards that would haunt the lads later. McKeown & Greig had efforts wide before Mitchell collected an early yellow, potentially making it a long night with the trickery of Greig to contend with. A Locos penalty appeal was more of a whimper with the opponent too close to cause the linesman anything to really consider. Locos were the better side & created several openings. Gauld was nearly in from a super Crisp ball but the touch was heavy. McPhee was yellowed for a high one on Angus. Jevan Anderson was next in the book for felling Souter as Locos broke through again. Stott had a lob cleared off the line by Rennie in a rare real moment of concern for Inverurie. HT 0-0. McPhee had a free kick well saved, before Souter smashed the ball over. Greig was being well tended by Mitchell & the little wide man was a lucky lad not to see yellow for more simulation in the Locos box. Referee Roncone right up with play & not buying the easy tumble to the deck. Crisp & McPhee traded shots then a Gethins volley drew a super Reid diving stop. Duff was yellowed in the last caution of the night. The match referee certainly not craving the limelight or the attention & allowing the footballers to be the focus of the paying public. Gethins hit the post from a free kick before Rodger sent the rebound wide. Twice play was delayed as Formartine had too many subs out together and encroaching on the park.
It was a goal against the run of play on the hour mark with stacks of good fortune attached. Reid pulled off a super stop but the ball broke perfectly for GETHINS who gleefully stroked it home. Really tough on the depleted & brave Locos. Angus had a shot saved, with Gethins next to fall over in the box with Roncone thoroughly unmoved. Leyden, Duff & Angus all had efforts but just that wee break, or calm guile in front of goal wasn’t quite there for Inverurie. Crisp headed wide with Rodger striking the outside of a post at the other end. MacDonald was left to be the hero when a Leyden free kick was deflected in slow motion allowing the goalie to make a save for the cameras. This summed up the night for the luckless Locos. Locos couldn’t find the net from their tenth corner & the full time whistle was met with relief from Formartine. A really terrific show from Loco Works with not a single player letting anyone down. Saturday sees Fort William visit before Banks o Dee come calling on Tuesday 21st in the Aberdeenshire Cup.
