Inverurie Locos continued their path to the Real McCoy on July 28th with an entertaining & thoroughly worthwhile pre-season clash with Dundee United 20s. Ex Scotland Under 21 star Craig Easton, one of the game’s real gentlemen, was making a welcome return to Harlaw Park, this time as United coach, after having been in the Garioch last term with Raith Rovers in the Scottish Youth Cup. Inverurie was yet again enjoying roasting temperatures, with the mercury touching twenty seven degrees at pitchside. Record goalscorer Neil Gauld was back as boss Cooper named a strong side to face these young full-time whipper snappers from Tannadice. Referee for this one was Scott Leslie. Gauld was first to have a pop for goal & fired a fierce volley only a yard or so over the bar. The same player then turned quickly & was again fractionally off target before notching his third shot upon the United sticks moments later. Gavin Ritchie tested Andy Reid with a low drive. Jamie Michie unluckily pulled up on twelve minutes & was replaced by Chris Herd. A Chris Angus cross caused panic at the back but the match was still goal-less. One of United’s Trialists forced a wonderful one handed stop from Reid, the big man pawing away what looked a certain opener. Angus twisted & turned before sending Gauld through with Donaldson diving full length to tip the drive away for a corner. Inglis & Thomas both shot wide ahead of an Angus drive being fielded & the lively Zata pulling an attempt wide. Four minutes ahead of the half time cuppas & Neil GAULD broke the deadlock with a sublime low left foot drive into the corner, from a Chris Angus assist. HT 1-0. United started the second half like a group of young men possessed & were level on fifty minutes. Kieran INGLIS floated a curling direct free kick high into the Locos net. Greg Mitchell had a direct free kick soon after but the ball went over the bar. TRIALIST THREE was now afield & looked nippy & direct. He capitalised on a wee bit of square defending & hesitancy to net a brace on sixty & sixty four minutes. Dundee United’s full time fitness & commensurate sharpness was now evident but the Railwaymen were putting in a good shift on a baking hot day that will have done their stamina reserves no harm at all. Andrew Watt started a wonderful Locos move with a sixty yard diagonal ball that eventually saw Charlesworth unlucky not to take it back to 3-2. Louis APPERE completed the scoring with eight minutes left, an individual effort where he showed fast feet, a dropped shoulder & a cool finish towards the back stick. FT Locos 1 Utd 4.
