PERFECT PARTICIPATION FOR LOCAL LOCOS
What does it take to be an ever-present semi-professional footballer, plying your trade in the highly competitive & fantastically combative Highland League? Attitude, fitness, desire, durability. A willingness to pull on that famous fire & coal jersey whilst maybe not quite 100% fit. In their sixteen senior seasons ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, Inverurie Locos had only recorded one outfield player as having started every competitive first team match throughout a whole campaign. Who was that? None other than Locos legend & current Assistant Manager Steven Park. The season was 2004/05 & the redoubtable Mr Park started all forty matches. Not to forget the men between the sticks, Andy Reid can also claim membership of the special club, starting all forty seven matches in 2013/14, the longest programme of matches the Railwaymen have had in the senior times. Therefore the odds of a modern day player repeating the feat were slim, given the pressures of juggling your full time employment with your sporting commitments & avoiding suspensions, no easy feat with many of the current referees confusing their cards with confetti. So you can imagine the pride up Harlaw Road that TWO players have achieved ever-present status this season. Step forward & take a bow, Greg Mitchell & Mark Souter. Greg took his appearance record from 55% in 16/17 to 100%, with Mark recording 75% in the previous campaign. Furthermore these Inverurie lads not only merely started each week, they formed fifty percent of a brilliant back four with team-mates Connor Rennie & Ryan Broadhurst, played at a top standard all season & were marshalled with authority by goalkeeper Andy Reid. Not content with these
landmark achievements, Soapy Souter also played EVERY minute of EVERY match including pre-season! Just for the Locos completists, the following players have all played some part in every game of a full campaign, but not started each match: Neil McLean, Ross McWilliam, Stuart McKay & Richie Davidson.
